Snoring is a worldwide phenomenon and there are nearly one billion snorers and in the United States there are about forty million of them. Men snore more commonly than women.  Often, people who snore are not aware of the less than congenial impact they are making. Lying on the back makes the throat muscles ease in forcing the air to struggle through.  Although anti-snoring devices that force you to sleep on your side can be bought, the inexpensive method is to use rolled up towels under one side of the head or a small ball stitched to the back of the nightwear.

By practising simple strengthening exercises for your throat and tongue, you can prevent them from slipping backwards. Alcohol causes flipping back of the muscles, so stay off the late night drink, if you wish to stop snoring.  Milk also leaves a layer of mucus and you are better off without milk just before going to sleep.

Men have heavier throat and the sheer difference in structure and weight could cause higher incidence of snoring. Talk to a doctor about specific approach to reduce weight around the neck.

Some other practical methods are to face down a steam bowl with head covered and making sure the place you sleep is clean and dust-free.

If you wish to clear your nasal path, then you could use little smelling strips.  In case you have a narrow nose, it could be corrected by surgery.  Snoring caused due to nasal constriction can often lead to intermittent stoppage of breathing. That is a serious cause for concern.

If you have received direct or subtle indications from others about your snoring and you were quite alarmed, take heart and try some of these remedies to stop snoring.  Consult a doctor if the problem persists.
